Since April 2004, Muriel and Joop have been running Son Bou Scuba, located in Son Bou on Menorca’s South coast. During the season of 2003 they started working on Menorca and used this time to get to know the island and to find the best dive
You can find the dive centre in the ‘Centro Commercial San Jaime’ in Son Bou, only a short distance away from the beach. Please visit our Accommodation page to view a detailed map of Son Bou.
Before coming to Menorca, Muriel and Joop worked for 8 years in the Maldives as scuba instructors and base leaders. Their experience, combined with high safety standards and organisational skills, will guarantee you a relaxed diving holiday. Whether you are a complete novice to scuba diving or an experienced technical diver, you will find our centre, facilities and staff to be the perfect choice for your diving activities. Click

At Son Bou Scuba the dive groups are kept small and experience levels are not mixed. This way, all divers get maximum enjoyment out of their dives. There is always an experienced ‘spare buddy’ at hand to accompany any single divers. Daily, we organize two or three guided dives by mini-bus or by boat to more than 45 exciting and unusual dive sites all around the island. On request we also organise night dives (a minimum of 4 divers and a favourable wind direction provided).
Son Bou Scuba is a fully licensed dive centre. We comply with all Spanish and European Community laws and Health & Safety regulations. We have oxygen cylinders and First Aid kits available in the dive centre, the cars and on the boat, as well as communications equipment.
Son Bou Scuba is a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, a BSAC Resort Centre and DAN Sponsor. We offer courses according to PADI and DAN standards – from absolute beginner to Assistant Instructor. For beginner courses we use either our swimming pool (2 min. walking distance from the dive centre) or one of many beaches available. Open Water students will make their first open water dives in one of Menorca’s sheltered coves. Crystal-clear water and a water temperature of up to 28 degrees Celsius (in July & August) guarantee ideal conditions for learning to scuba dive.
Certified divers who want to extend their knowledge can join one of our continuing education courses up to Assistant Instructor (PADI), as well as several PADI specialty courses like Cavern Diver, Nitrox Diver, Self-Reliant Diver, Dolphin Rebreather Diver, or Sidemount Diver, just to name a few. To see them all, please have a look here
Also younger divers can experience the feeling of being underwater. For 8 to 10 year olds, ever afternoon we offer ‘Bubblemaker’ courses in the pool (2 min. walking distance from the dive centre). For children from 10 years onwards it is possible to get certified as a PADI Junior Scuba Diver or PADI Junior Open Water Diver (at the discretion of the instructor). We have special equipment available for children, such as masks, fins, wetsuits, BCD’s and 5- & 8-litre cylinders.
Are you an experienced diver and curious about ‘more’? In this case, the PADI specialty courses cavern, sidemount diver, nitrox, self-reliant diver and deep diver may be appealing to you. These courses are a good preparation for anyone interested in technical diving. Although the above mentioned courses are recreational diving courses, they are at the limit of recreational and technical diving. Interested? You can find more information on our Prices & Courses page under ‘PADI specialty courses’.
For those who like a challenge, Son Bou Scuba offers 'Discover Rebreather Diving'. After a thorough familiarization with the equipment and safety rules, certified divers can do a dive in the pool or in the sea with the semi-closed Dolphin Dräger rebreather. We also offer the PADI specialty course ‘Dolphin semi-closed rebreather’. If you already have this certification, you can rent one of our rebreathers.
We think it is important that non-diving partners and friends also get an impression of why their family member or friend has so much fun diving. That is why non-diving partners can join on our diving trips for a small fee, provided there is space (please note: we are not allowed to transport children in car seats). You can then sunbathe or view the underwater world with mask and snorkel. For a trip by boat, the rates for snorkelling apply.
The equipment at Son Bou Scuba is as good as new. Every three years we renew all our wetsuits, regulators and cylinders. We have fifty 10-, 12- (dumpy) and 15-litre steel cylinders available (compatible with DIN or INT). For more demanding dives, we have 12-litre twinsets and ali 40 & 80 cuft cylinders available.
Our new Bauer compressors deliver 300 litres of clean, filtered air per minute up to 210 bar. The quality of the air is checked regularly and the maintenance service schedule is carried out as recommended by the manufacturer.
Son Bou Scuba is, among others, dealer for Aqualung, Fourth Element, Mares, Suunto und A.P. Diving. We have the following equipment available for rental:
- 20 x Apeks DS-4/XTX-40 regulators, fitted with XTX-20 octopus and pressure gauge
- 25 x Aqualung & Buddy BCD’s (ranging from XS to XXXL)
- 10 x Suunto Zoop Novo dive computers (suitable for nitrox and deco)
- 10 x Aluminium Mares EOS dive lights (1100 lumen)
- 40 x 5,5mm Aqualung full wetsuits. Our wetsuits come in an extensive range of sizes to fit all (up to XXXL). These can be combined with a hood and gloves if desired.
You can rent a complete set of equipment -including a dive computer- for only € 15 per dive, so why bother to bring your own?
Four digital Canon underwater cameras are available for rental, as well as several GoPro camera’s. If desired, one of our experienced instructors can capture your dive in pictures or on video, so you can enjoy your diving adventure again back home.
At Son Bou Scuba we have rinsing and drying facilities available with boxes and racks for storing and hanging personal equipment. Within the centre there’s a bathroom and changing room, including a hot shower. In our fully equipped workshop we can check your diving equipment and carry out minor repairs. Being qualified as Aqualung and Apeks technicians, we are authorised to service regulators for these brands.
After the dives, you are welcome to fill out your log book and have a beer with us. For the identification of the underwater life we have seen, the dive centre has several fish books available.
In May, the water of the Mediterranean is still a bit cold with around 15 degrees C. A 5mm wetsuit with a hood and gloves are recommended. For those who are very sensitive to the cold, a 7mm wetsuit or even a drysuit may be considered, especially when you do several dives a day.
In June the water temperature reaches about 22 degrees, in July and August even 25-28 degrees. For these months, a shorty or a 3mm suit is more than sufficient. For the other months, please have a look at the table below:
